An unidentified militant was killed by security forces in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Kulgam Saturday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

With this a total of 9 militants were killed by security forces in south Kashmir during the past two days.

He said on a specific information about the presence of militants troops of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police, CRPF and Rashtriya Rifles (RR) launched a joint search operation at village Likhdipora, Kulgam.

However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area after sealing all exit points in the village, militants hiding there opened fire with automatic weapons.

Security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, he said adding two to three militants are reportedly hiding in the area.

A militant was killed and operation was going on when the reports last came in, he said.

Meanwhile, additional security forces have been deployed in the nearby areas to maintain law and order.
